Johor Event attracts 1,000 runners who raise RM40,000 for projects 

KLUANG: The inaugural 10km OCBC Bonding Charity Run held in Kluang, Johor last Saturday attracted a thousand participants who collectively raised RM40,000 for charity.

The event, organised by Rotary Club of Kluang in partnership with title sponsor OCBC Bank (Malaysia) Bhd, is now set to become an annual affair.

Flagging off the run a day before Valentine’s Day, the Yang DiPertua Majlis Perbandaran Kluang, Ismail Abu was so pleased with the outcome that he asked for it to become a fixture on the Kluang community calendar and to start at the Dewan Jubli Intan for greater prominence in future.

The OCBC Bonding Charity Run 2016, which started at 7.30am at Taman Rekreasi Gunung Lambak, brought together participants from as young as nine to as old as 76, and even included guests from as far as Singapore and Taiwan.

The first 500 participants completing the run received a finisher’s medal, certificate and goodie bag.


Rotary Club of Kluang past president and organising chairman Chen Wee Kong said the charity run was aimed at promoting a passion and love for sports among youths in particular and to inculcate the spirit of healthy competition among them.

“The event aims to foster unity and get the community to come together to run for better health, bond and ultimately create a better lot for the underprivileged children of the community through the money that was raised. We would like to thank the Kluang community who came in droves to participate and support this cause and we are set to hold it again next year,” he said.

Also present at the run was OCBC Bank Kluang branch senior manager Rajandran Sangaran.


He said OCBC Bank, which has been operating in Kluang for 75 years, is looking into becoming even more entrenched in the localities in which it operates.

“Our involvement in the OCBC Bonding Charity Run is a prime example of how we collaborate and engage with communities throughout the country.

We are hoping to become even more involved with the Kluang community; and this partnership is one way for us to commit tangibly to going beyond simply providing banking products and services.

We would also like to meet the social needs of the community.
