JOHOR BARU:Spooky Twist
After hearing numerous stories that his hawker centre was once a haunted place, entrepreneur Mohd Norafiq Saat decided to take advantage of its “history”.
Traders at the Selera Flat Lama Bandar Baru Uda food centre now don spooky costumes to serve food, attracting more and more customers.
Located at Jalan Padi Mahsuri here, the 14 stalls offer a variety of western dishes as well as local favourites such as ikan bakar and their signature dish nasi lemak berhantu (haunted nasi lemak).
Mohd Norafiq, 30, said that with traders dressing up as pocong(wrapped ghost), puntianak (vampire) and zombies among others, customers have been coming to check out the place.
He added that to make the theme more appealing, a few workers would make special appearances every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
“During the appearances, customers can take the opportunity to pose for pictures with the “ghosts” as they mingled around,” he said.
Mohd Norafiq said that he came up with the idea after residents shared tales that the place was haunted.
“Since this place is famous for its ghost stories, I decided to bring its history to life,” he said, adding that the centre opens from Tuesdays to Sundays from 5pm to 1am.
Mohd Norafiq said that the centre quickly expanded from three stalls to 14 since its operations commenced five months ago, adding that most operators were youths.
“In order to cope with the strong competition in the business world today, we must always look for a unique approach to draw customers, and that is what we are doing here,” he said.
